H. Lawrence & Sons Ropeworks
Higgins Quasebarth & Partners served as historic preservation consultants to the Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center for the rehabilitation of a former rope factory in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. GMDC is a local non-profit organization which promotes the creation of affordable, industrial space in Brooklyn. HQ conducted historical research on the nine building H. Lawrence & Sons Ropeworks complex, which led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Working in conjunction with OCV Architects, HQ provided technical preservation consultation services and outlined specific actions in rehabilitating the complex so as to meet federal preservation standards and receive historic preservation tax credits. GMDC coupled these tax credits with New Market Tax Credits in an innovative financing structure that made the project feasible. In rejuvenating the H. Lawrence & Sons Ropeworks complex, HQ furthered the mission of the Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center and aided in the creation of twenty affordable rental units for artisanal and light industrial tenants. The rehabilitation of the H. Lawrence & Sons Ropeworks complex was awarded a Building Brooklyn Award for historic preservation in 2009.
