The Asia Society Building, designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes and completed in 1981, is an eight story maroon granite building of the post-modern style. Located on Park Avenue and East 70th Street, the Asia Society is located in heart of the Upper East Side Historic District. While it was not eligible to be an individual landmark at the time of the district’s designation, The Asia Society Building is included in the historic district and is protected accordingly.

HQ served as historic preservation consultants to The Asia Society for an addition to their 1981 building. Working with Voorsanger Architects, HQ provided design consultation for a modern glass addition which responds to the historically sensitive side street on which it fronts. HQ guided the project through the Landmarks Preservation Commission approval process. The Asia Society project was completed in 1999 and the glass addition encloses what is now the garden court and cafe.
