Apollo Theater

Project Description

HQ served as historic preservation consultants to The Apollo Theater Foundation Inc. for the rehabilitation of this renowned historic theater.  Originally named the Hurting & Seamon’s New Theater, the theater was renamed The Apollo Theater in the 1930s and soon became the premiere performance hall for African-American performers in the country. Working with the Foundation and its architect, Beyer Blinder Belle, HQ provided consultation on the restoration of the theater’s facades and iconic signage, restoration and systems upgrades in the theater’s auditorium, and the installation of visible mechanical units including HVAC equipment and a smoke-purge system across the roofs.  As part of its services, HQ advised the project team on a range or preservation issues and coordinated reviews by the New York State Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service to ensure that all work complied with the Secretary of Interior’s Standards in order to qualify for historic preservation tax credits.
